Once It Was
May 3, 2010 Architecture, Ruins
I was driving on the normal road almost in the middle of nowhere when suddenly I went past this place where I had to stop. On the one side of the road there is a church and on the other side is this old manor. Actually, people still live there. I realized this when I saw a satellite dish on the roof. This is something unimaginable to me…

Damn Birdies!

Can you imagine a real cat sitting on the roof and being shitted on by birds? No, of course. I think that a real cat, if it sees this one, thinks about it being a disgrace of all cats.
Despite the fact that this is Latvian famous Cat House.
Livu Square
Oct 6, 2008 Architecture

Riga has some nice squares in the Old Town, especially in summer when they are filled with outdoor cafes. Interesting thing about these squares is that they are not very old. They appeared after the wars when the houses were bombed. But now they feel very much like the part of Old Riga. Like they always were there.

Straupe Castle II
Apr 3, 2008 Architecture

This place is like folklore. They say - if you drink too much, you will end up in Straupe. Seems like a nice place, but in this building there is a nacological hospital.
In my opinion, it is not the best place for a hospital. It is not built for that purpose and there could be more useful ways to use this medieval castle. But we have a tradition of bad our heritage managing. We burned down one of our most beautiful castles in Cesvaine some years ago and we have more similar cases like that. At least we don’t use churches as warehouses anymore, like it was in Soviet time…

As promised, we move on to the next castle in the town of Straupe. I have driven past this medieval castle, always wanted to stop and walk around it, but never managed. Last weekend we finally went there. Tomorrow I will post some information about this place.

Another photo from yesterday’s trip to Bīriņi Castle. Near the castle I found this fallen bird house which was almost asking to put in the composition with the main building of the castle.
